A half dozen or so times a year on the North Shore of Oahu, heavy rainwater will build up behind the sand berms on the Waimea River, whereupon resourceful surfers will take upon themselves to dig a small channel creating some awesome standing waves for the day. This, allegedly, is where the idea for those indoor/water-park/cruise ship wave machines came from. :-) [via wimp]
