(Older story, but…)
Painting by 26-year-old Danish art student Nadia Plesner, after being sued by Louis Vuitton over an image of a Darfurian child holding a chihuahua and purse (a-la Paris Hilton).
She thought that if Paris Hilton gets attention by carrying around fashion handbags and small dogs [maybe the] same concept should work for the children of Darfur? […]
Louis Vuitton did not agree, and filed a “copyright lawsuit demanding $20,000 a day for each day she continued to use this image and reimbursement for legal fees.” Plesner was eventually forced to stop selling merchandise (mainly t-shirts) featuring only the image of the child.
“If I instead placed the boy with the bag in an oil painting Louis Vuitton would not say anything, I was told. Then what I have done suddenly classifies as art.”
